Greece

In Greece, there are 37 Higher Education Institutes of which 22 are universities.Three have built digital repositories for research output: the University of Macedonia, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Crete. OpenDOAR also lists the University of Patras. The University of Athens and the University of Crete have developed OAI repositories with historical and cultural content.

There are also 14 Research Institutes funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Development of the Ministry for Development.

Only one University, the University of Macedonia, has signed the Berlin Declaration so far. From the Research Institutes, the National Hellenic Research Foundation has also signed the Berlin Declaration.

However, HEAL_Link , the Greek Academic Libraries Consortium has prepared a report for the Council of Rectors, seeking their support to the open access movement. HEAL-Link will strive to promote OA issues in the next five years.

A small number of University Libraries operate Institutional Repositories and collect theses and dissertations. These libraries are also running digitisation projects of archival material (manuscripts, rare books out of copyright etc). All these projects are funded by the Ministry of Education and the funds are partly EU structural funds.
