Open Access Organisations/Groups
Kosson initiative is a virtual community of Information Science specialists in Romania having http://www.kosson.ro website (in Romanian) as its central point for exchanging news, practices and specialised communication features.
Kosson online community members dedicate their efforts in raising awareness regarding new models for scientific output dissemination. Our aim is to advocate and feed quality information into the higher educational system and to all parties involved in scholarly communication process. We put efforts in stimulating a debate around OA in Romania and offer instruments, methods and practices, and standards needed to push forward for a viable and sustainable solution for the future. The ultimate goal is to become a clearing house for advocating, dissemination and sharing good practices concerning OA and information management (setting the future web point www.acces-deschis.ro) in Romania and neighboring countries. Since 2005 when members of our community took interest in Open Access we have translated and disseminated many useful prime instruments like the cornerstone declarations (Berlin Declaration, IFLA Statement on Open Access to Scholarly Literature and Research Documentation). Our community got involved with organising Open Access Day putting together a press kit and disseminating on all major electronic Romanian channels in order to raise awareness. Core members of Kosson community signed the Petition for guaranteed public access to publicly-funded research results and many of the subsequent petitions – American and Brazilian. We’ve brought to the Romanian interested parties the outcomes of one of the most important European documents: Study on the economic and technical evolution of the scientific publication markets in Europe.
In order to get our members much closer to the insides of support platforms needed also by the Open Access we have translated into Romanian The Skills, Role and Career Structure of Data Scientists and Curators: An Assessment of Current Practice and Future Needs (2008). Commissioned by JISC – an instrument that brings understanding upon the future developments of the repositories designed to manage research output.
Kosson Community is also the translator of OAI-PMH v. 1 standard in Romanian and also for the Open Archive Initiative Tutorial. We have contributed to the European Research Area – New Perspectives online consultation (2007) getting in favour of open access alternative models to the appropriate sections.
We hope to succeed in maintaining a solid knowledge base regarding standards and practices concerning Open Access.
Open Access Projects/Initiatives
I would like to present to you the Open Access Disc, one of the primary information sources for all the Romanian scholarly fora and information scientists in Romania. Open Access Disc was launched on 27th of November at Central University Library Bucharest as the main information product for Open Access advocating in Romania. This is a collection of resources that will help all those interested to get a view upon Open Access paradigm. The content is both in Romanian language and also English as all of the texts are translations from the original texts. The English facet has been built as a natural correspondence as the content is translated from English language. Also this facet is put in its rightful place thinking the purpose of gaining support also from external partners and bringing them more close to our efforts. The aim of this product is to bring awareness and offer insight to someone starting with the introductory notions up to the stage of using a real helping tool: Open Journal Systems. This product is not a final one nor a complete collection though we have stride to bring the most visible and easy to understand resources out there. This collection should be regarded as a grid that has to be evolved into a complex answer structured in a simple condensed manner. We hope you will find this product as something interesting and we are glad if your opinions return to us.
Also the Open Access Disc contains the Romanian translation of Open Access - Opportunities and challenges: a handbook. In this respect we would like to thank the Research Directorate-General and German Commission for UNESCO.
We would like to thank all of those who got involved in all the stages of Open Access Disc build up.
